Multiple racers find triumph at Hall of Fame races (1)

There was redemption in the hot night air for Dylan Sandberg in Friday's hobby stock feature at Dacotah Speedway.

Early in the evening, during a make-up run of the races previously scheduled for the Night of the Legends races on June 28, Sandberg's car overheated and lost power steering after leading for much of the race.

“After a night like tonight it’s hard to stay confident,” Sandberg said. “I always tell myself its just like riding a bike, once you learn you never forget.”

Sandberg battled and took command of the evening's second hobby stocks feature after going back-and-forth with John Gartner Jr. early in the race, but according to Sandberg, it was less about a strategy to win and more about hoping to finish the race.

“I was just kind of waiting for what happened next,” he said. “But it all held together.”

Holding together for the victory was not a solo venture for Sandberg, who said he received support from his friends in racing, even using spare parts from the car of a friend whose car had blown out.

“As soon as something happens, we’re all willing to help,” Sandberg said. “I actually ended up with his distributor in the car and some other parts, everyone’s willing to help.”

While Sandberg received vindication in his late-night victory, earlier in the evening, while the sun was still shining, his unfortunate accident spelled triumph for first-time race winner Joseph Feist.

“It feels great,” Feist said of his first victory. “I got pretty lucky, so I’ll take it.”

Feist started third after a drawing based on the results of the heats from June 28 before it was rained out. Early in the race, Feist said he was working the high line of the track, playing 'follow-the-leader' and caught Sandberg before Sandberg’s car overheated.

“Super unfortunate what happened to him,” Feist said. “But I will take it. I am very grateful that it happened.”

With the race leader, Sandberg, retired from the race, all that was remaining was a three-lap winner-take-all gauntlet. Early into it, Brody Michaelson spun out making contact with multiple other cars and clearing the way for Feist to take pole position.

Feist said his race strategy from there was pretty simple.

“Not wreck it,” Feist said. “I knew I had two features coming into the night, so I decided to drive with my head and not to put my car where it didn’t belong.”

It was a strategy that got Feist his first win. He would go on to finish seventh in the hobby stock feature later in the night.

While a first career win for Feist was a huge milestone, Quentin Kinzley won his third straight race in the IMCA Modifieds in the makeup race to start the evening.

“It’s unreal,” Kinzley said. “Just winning one is big enough of a challenge and to pull off three in a row, it’s just unreal.”

Kinzley exploited the high side, using it to catapult from outside fourth row, where he started, to pass Jacoby Traut who had started from the pole position. From there Kinzley held onto the lead to take the win. From then, he would come second in his heat race behind Shawn Strand and place fifth in the regularly scheduled IMCA Mod feature. Kollin Hibdon of Fargo would take the victory in the second mod feature.

Beyond Sandberg, Feist, and Kinzley, it was a big night for multiple racers, like the Madler brothers, Gage, and Noah, who finished first and second in the INEX Legends feature, respectively. Madler overtook his older brother late in the race after his brother had held a commanding lead for much of the race.

Marlyn Seidler won his first race of the season in the IMCA Stock Car category. Seidler was fourth in his heat.

In the IMCA Sport Compact feature, Zach Hughbanks jumped from third to first, after taking second in the heat race.
