Chicago Tribune from Chicago, Illinois (2024)

DAILY Tuesday, February 14, 1950 Part 3-Page 6 1,866 FILE FOR 625 SEATS IN BRITISH HOUSE Nominations Are Closed; Minister Shut Out BY ARTHUR VEYSEY Chicago Tribune Press LONDON, Feb. 13-More Britons want to be members of parliament than ever before. Nominations for the Feb. 23 election closed today after a total of 1,866 men and women had filed candidacy papers at town halls thruout the nation. Only 625 will be elected to the house of commons.

Just one Conservative will get a ride into the new parliament without Laborite opposition. He is the speaker of the house, Col. Clifton Brown. His seat is considered above politics. One of the present Labor cabinet ministers, Lewis Silkin, minister of town and country planning, has been left out in the cold.

None of the local Labor party associations would accept him as their candidate. However, his socialist colleagues plan to make him a nobleman and, as such, he will be able to sit for the rest of his life in the house of lords. Four in Churchill Family Run The Churchill family is out in force. Winston, his son, Randolph, and two of the former prime minister's sons-in-law, Duncan Sandys Capt. Christopher Soames, have been nominated by the Conservatives.

In the 1945 election the Labor party did not oppose Churchill "out of regard for his war time services." This time, however, the Labor party in Woodford, a London suburb which is Churchill's molitical home, has advanced a 38 year old printer, Seymour Hills. The communists also named a candidate for Woodford. Many Women Are Candidates More than 100 women are seeking seats. The number is the biggest in history since parliament was opened to women by the invasion of American born Nancy Astor. Many of the 625 districts will have three and four-way fights.

Final figures on nominations by parties were: Labor, 586; Conservatives, 552; Liberals, 472, and While Labor the ConservaCommunists, 100nd tives actually are contesting almost every one of the 625 seats, they are relying on smaller, affiliated parties in some districts. Main Foes in Scotland The two vividly contrasted aspirants for the premiershipLaborite Attlee and Conservative Churchill--will receive almost simultaneous judgment from the unpredictable Scottish electors. While Winnie rolled north to exhort Edinburgh's voters tomorrow, Labor's thin man" pursued his way across Scotland, talking earnestly and exuding confidence. "Victory is in the air today, as it was in 1945," he said at Greenock. The prime minister also spoke in the big shipping and shipbuilding center of Glasgow.

JOHN J. MALLOY, 56, UNDERTAKER, DIES IN 'L' CRASH John J. Malloy, 56, undertaker at 2627 Lawrence was killed yesterday when his automobile was struck 1 by a two car Ravenswood elevated train at Sacramento and Leland where it runs the ground level. A freak gate operation may have contributed to his death, police said. The Sacramento, av.

Hamlin told Policemen Bernard McGovern and Richard Meade of the accident prevention division that he lowered the gates and "they bounced up" just as Malloy approached. Malloy tried to brake his car to a stop but it skidded to the tracks, where the loop bound train struck it. Motorman Robert Kope, 59, of 4518 N.

Harding stopped quickly. Malloy had been in business at 2627 Lawrence av. for 18 years. He lived upstairs. His widow, Ella, survives.

Miss Pepple, who was told to notify police when she related her story to hospital employes, said the men pulled her into their automobile parked near her home as she was returning from the hospital.

One of the men held her in the rear seat on a ride to ler Park and, when she attempted to jump out, struck her with his fist, breaking her eyeglasses. When the driver slackened speed, Miss Pepple said, she leaped out and rolled uninjured into a ditch near Montrose av. and River rd. The kidnapers fled, and Miss Peppie walked to a tavern. Patrons took her to her home, she said.
