DA A rig that drills -through rock in the ground by a process called thermo-chemical fusion was demonstrated to a group of scientific writers Thursday at the research laboratories of the Linde Air Products Corporation. The company is hopeful it will find wide application in mining ores, especially those of a type which are not useful industrially because of the difficulty in mining them. Steel industry authorities said the device, which literally melts the rock as it pierces the earth, should open the way for unloosening millions of tons of flinty, solid bodies of ore containing iron. That would be a step in solving the problem of what the steel industry will do for ore when present supplies of hematite and magnetite run out. Like Acetylene Torch The apparatus, in many respects, looks like a conventional drilling rig.

Streams of oxygen, fuel oil and steam a are fed into the bit. The oil contains a fluxing agent. Like an acetylene torch with a steel bit on it, the drill, about 6 inches diameter, plunges into rock at" the rate of 3 inches a minute, or about 15 feet an hour. The rock is actually fused as the drill decends. The smoke from the fuel oil, steam and small rock par- I ticles are thrown into the air by a blower system.

Linde already has tried out the rig successfully on the Minnesota iron range where there are millions of tons of hard, taconite ore, rich in iron content, which mining companies have not attempted to use generally because of the high cost of breaking it up and preparing it for shipment to blast furnaces. The fusion process makes possible the rapid drilling of holes at proper intervals for blasting purposes. First Application of Kind Linde research men said that as far as is known this is the first improvement in drilling in several generations and is the first application of rock fusion to drilling. I na tour of plant's laboratories, the visitors, they who represented iron and steel trade papers, paused to watch the handling of liquid nitrogen from tank car to storage tank. A large vat of liquid nitrogen, 350 stood degrees below zero Fahrenheit, in the open air SO the evaporating action could be watched.

Technical sessions were held at which the application oxygen in steel making was described. Research work in this field is being done for experiments in 24 steel plants. The oxygen is introduced into the open hearth furnaces either by jet device or a pipe and this helps to speed up the steel-making process. Barre Guild Monument Hdqts. 1108 Orchard Park Road Ebenezer, N. Y. WO. 5853 MEMBER MONUMENT BUILDERS OF WESTERN NEW YORK WESTERN ELECTRIC BUYS OLD CURTISS PLANT, WILL EXPAND The Western Electric Co.

which late Thursday disclosed the purchase of the former CurtissWright Corporation plant at Kenmore Ave. and Vulcan today announced its plans for expansion in the Buffalo area will move ahead at an accelerated pace. The company, world's largest manufacturer of telephone equipment and a leading manufacturer in the electronics field, has been occupying the big plant under a three-year lease since June 1946. The purchase price was not disclosed but revenue stamps on the deed filed in the County Clerk's office placed the cash consideration around $3,000,000. In addition, about $2,000,000 has been earmarked manufacturing operations including new equipment.

Much of this already has been spent since the company started producing wire and wire products, including switchboard cable, in the plant last August. "A large amount of new equipment is being installed as well as being transferred from other plants," Western Electric said. "The acquisition of the plant is part of a plan of expansion of our manufacturing facilities to meet the demands of the Bell System. The plant now employs 1850 workers and this number will be increased to 2600 when the installation of all manufacturing equipment is completed." Included in the sale are some areas of land area and 779,000 square feet of building area. The factory includes group of -story manufacturing buildings, a three-story office building and a number of service buildings.

Western Electric, controlled by the American Telephone Telegraph Company, has designated the factory as its Tonawanda plant. Harold V. Schmidt manager of the plant, having been recently transferred from the company Hawthorne plant on the outskirts of Chicago. The former Curtiss-Wright plant, which was known during the war as Plant No. 1 of the Airplane Division, is divided into two parts.

The one section is occupied by Western Electric and the other is owned by the Government. The Govern section is unoccupied. Bid Talks Won't Cut Vet Hospital Items No items will be eliminated from the original plans for the Veterans Administration hospital in Grover Cleveland Park despite the present difference of $3,549,707 between the Government's estimate and lowest contractor's for the project, Col. Herbert Vogel, disbidy trict engineer, declared today. "We are not approaching the problem from that angle at all," Col.

Vogel said. "We are working solely from the viewpoint of getting the price within our estimate." It may be necessary, eventually, to make some substitutions in the hospital specifications, Col. Vogel admitted. SCHUH- David F. Schuh, June 6, 1947, beloved husband of Bertha J.

NEW YORK, June sale at the Parke-Bernet galleries, during an auction next Thursday and Friday: A drunkard's chair. Drunkard's chairs were popular during the Chippendale period of English furniture-making, according to the galleries, and one of their features is a wide entrance at the front, SO that the sitter, backing in waveringly after a quart or so of port, has at least an even chance of hitting the seat. Also, the seats are as much as 30 inches in width, compared with an ordinary chair's 22 inches.

This allows sprawling, as do the chair's wide, curved armrests and the tilted back. Drunkards, tipplers or teetotallers interested in this item will find that the chairs sell for about $200. BUSINESS RECORD BUILDING PERMITS A. Volo, 199 Grant. $200.
